books to get you through the cold months

Seed catalogs are nice, but sometimes a long winter’s night requires eye candy with a little more substance. One of my favorite books to page through when all seems bare and bleak is Fred Whitsey’s, The Garden at Hidcote, with photographs by Tony Lord. This tour of American ex-pat Lawrence Johnson’s extensive manor garden includes images from all seasons: neatly-clipped evergreens under a dusting of snow, effusive Spring bulbs in delightful pastels, brilliant mid-summer roses and amber berry bushes in the warm light of autumn.

Hidcote, Spring

Looking through this book reminds me to be mindful of my garden’s structure; of the interaction of the plants as well as their own individual beauty – something that is all too easy to forget when looking at catalogs!
